First golf course in Madeira Islands

Did you know...the parish of Santo António da Serra is the crib of golf in Madeira?

In 1933 golf was played on lands of the Hotel-Pousada da Serra, which at the time was a nine-hole par 3 course.
In 1935 began the construction of the "Favellas" Course at Santo da Serra Golf Club, whose nine holes course was opened on 25 February 1937.

In 1991, Robert Trent Jones Sr. created the 18-hole Championship course, the year when the Machico and Desertas courses opened, contributing to the development of the sport in this region. In January 1993 the Madeira Island Open was held for the first time, a tournament integrated into the European professional golf circuit, known as the PGA European Tour, with Mark James emerging as the winner in its first year.
