The avocado is an exotic fruit from the avocado tree (Persea americana), which belongs to the laurel family originally from South America, particularly Mexico, currently cultivated in subtropical regions.
The edible part of the fruit is a yellowish green pulp, of paste-like consistency, with a large pit, 3 to 5 cm in diameter. Its skin colour varies from green to dark red, brownish, violet or black; its average weight ranges between 150 and 500 g.
In Madeira, the occupied area corresponds to 88 ha, which produces 1010 tonnes per year.
