The custard apple is a regional fruit, with a tropical flavour and a cultivation that currently covers an area of approximately 104 hectares.
The custard apple, fruit of the custard apple tree (Annona cherimola Mill.), is native to the valleys of the Andes highlands. Long established in Madeira, the custard apple tree easily adapted by finding soil and climatic conditions close to those of the geographical area of its origin.
Depending on the appearance of the skin, the custard apple has some similarities with the artichoke, and may be smooth or scaly. In the first case the skin is thin, with little protruding reticles in a “u” shape, while the second shows a thicker skin, with further creased aureoles and prominent edges. Its pulp is usually white, velvety and sweet. Some consider that its flavour is a blend of banana, pineapple and with notes of strawberry, others compare it to a mixture that, besides the taste of those fruits, further adds those of mango, papaya and coconut. custard apple has an unique, unmistakable taste of its own, and no resemblance to other subtropical and tropical fruits should be sought.
