Sugar cane is one of the agricultural species with the greatest relevance in the History of Madeira, which originated the 'White Gold Age'.
Sugar cane is a species that belongs to the Gramineae family, the Saccharum genus, officinarum species.
The cultivation of sugar cane in Madeira dates back to the 15th century when the island became a major supplier of sugar, which became known as white gold. It was introduced in Madeira in 1425 by Infante D. Henrique, imported from Sicily.
Currently, in Madeira, sugar cane is intended mainly for the production of cane honey and cane spirit.
