The Official MadeiraTourism Board (Direção Regional do Turismo da Madeira - DRT) is a Regional Government Department of the Madeira Autonomous Region, administered by the Regional Secretariat of Economy, Tourism and Culture (SRETC). It is a non-profit organization, which is operated and financed by the Regional Government.

The DRT’s mission is to study, coordinate, promote, carry out and monitor tourism in accordance with the government policies for the tourism industry, with the aim of developing sustainable, balanced tourism in the Madeira Autonomous Region- Madeira and Porto Santo Islands.

The DRT is responsible for:

a) Contributing to how the regional tourism industry’s strategic plans and priorities are defined;
b) Qualifying and promoting the competitiveness of tourism in the region;
c) Promoting the image and promotional strategy of the Madeira Islands as a tourist destination, and implementing this through its services or in partnership with the institutions that exist for this purpose;
d) Coordinating the execution of action plans and programmes relating to tourism in the Madeira Autonomous Region, assessing them continuously, and supporting any promotional actionsand initiatives that are implemented in the regional tourism area;
e) Encouraging good use, management, valuation and preservation of the tourism resources in the Madeira Autonomous Region;
f) Implementing actions aimed at enhancing the quality of the tourist destination;
g) Analysing and proposing financial support for initiatives and projects which stimulate and promote tourism activities which are considered to be of interest, in accordance with applicable legislation, and then monitoring and controlling them;
h) Supporting the member of Government in licensing and approving tourism activities or undertakings, as well as giving recognition to their interest to tourism;
i) Monitoring the evolution and developing studies of the tourism markets, notifying higher authorities of any possible opportunities and making proposals of the strategies to be adopted for exploiting them;
j) Coordinating the execution of action plans and programmes in the tourism domain and assessing their implementation;
l) Coordinating with all the regional, national and international services and institutions on matters relating to all subjects of interest to the tourism industry;
m) Ensuring that the tourist destination is represented at all official and private institutions connected with tourism, as well as participating in national and international events in this area;
n) Promoting the development of studies and statistics, and ensuring the collection, handling, editing and publishing of tourist information;
o) Giving opinions on projects and undertakings related to tourism and to other activities and undertakings that fall with its legal remit;
p) Inspecting tourism services and activities to check that they are in compliance with current legislation;
q) Monitoring and inspecting the legal aspects of any activities related to gambling.

The DRT is headed by a regional director and has the following structure:

a)  Directorate of Enterprise Services and Touristic Activities (DSEAT);
b)  Directorate of Tourist Events (DSET);
c)  Directorate of Information Services and Touristic Projects (DSIPT)

 

  • Directorate of Enterprise Services and Touristic Activities (DSEAT)

The mission of the Directorate of Enterprise Services and Touristic Activities, designated by DSEAT in brief, is generally to support, coordinate and perform all the actions of preservation, enhancement and management of the resources and tourism activities, with a view to increasing the quality of the regional touristic offering.
The Directorate of Enterprise Services and Touristic Activities (DSEAT) comprises the following departments, each headed by a head of department, a 2nd degree intermediate management position.

- Department of Tourism Activities (DAT)
- Department of Inspection and Supervision (DIF)
 

  • Directorate of Tourist Events (DSET)

The Directorate of Tourist Events designated by DSET in brief, aims, generally, to plan, develop, enhance, and perform tourism entertainment activities.
The Directorate of Tourist Events (DSET) is led by a services director, a 1st degree intermediate management position.

 

  • Directorate of Information Services and Touristic Projects (DSIPT)

The Director of Information Services and Touristic Projects, abbreviated as DSIPT, has as its general mission to plan, develop, enhance, and perform tourism entertainment activities, as well as analyse, monitor and develop projects oriented towards tourism, the creation and the development of tourism products.
The Directorate of Information Services and Touristic Projects (DSIPT) is led by a director of services, a 1st degree intermediate management position, which includes the DIPT (Department of information and Touristic Projects), headed by a Head of Department, a 2nd degree intermediate management position.


Official Madeira Tourism Website Advertising Policy
As it is a public entity, the DRT policy for the website www.visitmadeira.pt is one of complete neutrality. For this reason, advertising such as banners, links, etc is not allowed.
It is the duty of this institution to give publicity to all the tourist resources licensed by the DRT, this includes: accommodation units, travel agencies and leisure activities companies operating in the tourism industry.
It is also important to remember that, as the primary purpose of the website is to advertise the Madeira Islands as a tourist destination, it is very much in its interest to include information about places of interest to tourists such as museums, leisure areas and tourist attractions, amongst others, which it does free of charge.
