Madeira to host a new race in 2018
Starting in June, event organisers of the 3,000-mile round trip between the Italian city of Livorno and Funchal especially chose this destination to host the event.
This first edition of the race is open to fast 950 Class boats, but Class 40 boats and the Sun Fast 3600 of French shipowner Jeanneau will also be able to participate.
There are several obligatory points of passage on this journey through the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean, with prizes awarded at Porquerolles Island (the France Prize), Mallorca (the Mallorca Prize), Gibraltar (the Pillars of Hercules Prize) and Funchal, where the winner will be awarded the ‘Ocean Prize’. On the return journey, crews will have to pass through Ibiza (the Ibiza Prize), the Strait of Bonifacio in Sardinia (the Bonifacio Prize) and finally, on arrival in Riva di Traiano (Rome), the Madeira 950 Open Race Trophy will be awarded.
