Columbus Festival

Columbus Festival
This event, dedicated to Christopher Columbus, features a range of music and theatre shows, as well as exhibitions and parades related to the Portuguese discoveries.
The first contact that Columbus had with Madeira occurred in 1478 when Funchal was doing the sugar trade, but his deepest ties to the archipelago came with his marriage to Filipa Moniz, daughter of the first captain-donee of Porto Santo. Columbus lived in the archipelago between 1480 and 1482, where his son Diogo was born.
The festival includes a range of initiatives related to life on the island at the time, with plenty of music, street entertainment and exhibitions; the re-enactment of the disembarkation of Columbus and his entourage at the city dock is the most attractive initiative of this historic event, between the 13th and the 15th of September.
