The “Bolo do Caco” bread is a prime exemple of Madeiran food. Despite the name “bolo” [cake], this is actually a type of bread.

The “Bolo do Caco” bread has a cultural connection between the local bread and bread of Arab influence.

Made with wheat flour, homemade yeast, water and salt, it is kneaded and after leavening, the dough is cut into round and flat pieces. Originally it was baked on a preheated stone (the "caco") previously heated, now it is baked on a metal plate heated with a gas flame.

This bread is eaten hot with or without garlic butter.
