Located at Calçada de Santa Clara street the Frederico de Freitas House Museum is an impressive rose-colored building considered one of the most emblematic urban civil architecture buildings placed within the historic district of São Pedro and at Funchal city centre.
Commonly known as the “Casa da Calçada,” this building served as former residence of the Counts of Calçada, and its ancestors since the early seventeenth century.

This building, formerly owned by Dr. Frederico de Freitas (1894-1978), lawyer, notary and a Madeiran collector, gathers an impressive art collection bequeathed in 1978, to the Autonomous Region of Madeira.

This museum gathers precious collections of Sculpture, Paintings, Prints, Furniture, Ceramics, Crystals and Copper objects dating from the 17th to 19th centuries. The religious theme dominates most of the sculpture and painting art works except to some European art pieces based on Portuguese-eastern style.
The distinctive Mug Collection on display is another of its main highlights depicting different art styles dated from 18th century to nowadays.
On the other hand this museum holds a collection of prints an important iconographic source dated from 18th to 19th centuries with particular highlight to those depicting Madeira islands.

This museum was completed by 1999 with the completion of the “Casa dos Azulejos”, a structure built especially to house the eclectic and extensive collection of glazed tiles, with Oriental, Islamic, medieval, majolica inspiration apart from a display of glazed tiles of dutch influence. The Portuguese tiles collection includes a set of important items of national production dated from the 17thcentury to nowadays.
