Caminho do Norte
The trail starts at Boca da Encumeada and ends at Ribeira Grande, in the parish of São Vicente, at an altitude of between 1000 and 320 metres.
This path follows the remains of an old trail, once used by the locals as a connection between the villages in the south to those in the north, enabling them to trade and take part in traditional pilgrimages.
The first part of the trail goes through the lush Laurissilva forest, classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and part of the Natura 2000 network. It passes the Estrada Regional (E.R. 104), the trail goes through a transition forest, where there are many examples of tropical forest plants.
As you arrive at Ribeira Grande don't miss the traditional basket weaving. The wicker branches are taken from willows, which are harvested in order to provide the raw material with which various traditional baskets are made, as well as furniture and the famous Monte wicker sledges.
