“From Braguinha to Ukelele – a 140 years journey”
Within the scope of the project “From Braguinha to Ukelele, a 140 years journey”, the Xarabanda Association promotes a cultural initiatives cycle on the topic “Irmandade da Braguinha” [Brotherhood of Braguinha], programmed for 2, 4, 6 and 7 May, respectively.
This commemoration shall include various aspects, among which, training workshops for braguinha [small Portuguese string instrument] and rajão [5-string instrument of Madeira], directed by Roberto Moniz, as well as the launch of a philatelic collection and postcard by CTT [Portuguese post services], as a tribute to the celebration of the Ukelele’s 125th anniversary and the arrival of the Madeiran citizens to Honolulu on 23 August 1879.
In parallel, shall occur the worldwide premiere of the “LEGACY” documentary by Nuno Jardim, a young cinema director from Lisbon, who, while travelling through Hawaii, found rooted traditions derived from the Portuguese immigration, which began on the 19th century.
This cultural initiatives cycle ends on 7 May, with a joyful night get-together, in an event open to the public at Fortaleza de São João Baptista do Pico [Fortress of St. John The Baptist], in Funchal, around 07.00 P.M.
