The island of Porto Santo was the first Portuguese finding, accomplished in the 15th century.
This is the place where the epic Portuguese discoveries era began, by the ruling of Prince Henry, the Navigator. Nevertheless, the most illustrious inhabitant was navigator, Christopher Columbus. It is in his honour that the Columbus Festival is held every year, featuring historical recreations of the period when this famous merchant lived on the golden island.
The festival takes place in a sixteenth-century atmosphere at the beach and in the city of Vila Baleira, including the arrival of the Santa Maria replica and a theatrical recreation of the main chapters of his life, such as his wedding.
