Madeira – A Love Story
"Madeira – Uma História de Amor" (Madeira – A Love Story) was commissioned from Madeira Amateur Dramatic Society (MADS) as part of the 600th Anniversary Celebrations of the Discovery of the Islands of Madeira and Porto Santo.
The première of this Musical, which will be free and is bilingual, will take place at the Madeira Casino Congress Centre on 17 May at 9pm and in two sessions on 18 May at 5pm and 9pm.
The musical "Madeira - Uma História de Amor" is inspired by the legend of Machim. The play tells the 600-year history of Madeira through the character Maria do Mar, a young student writing a play on the theme and who, halfway through the process of research, writing and rehearsals, begins to receive incredible information about the history of Madeira whispered to her by the ghost of Robert Machim.
Like Robert Machim and Ana d'Arfet, Maria do Mar will also experience a forbidden love with a young man of humble origin named Pedro, with whom she falls passionately in love. In this way, a parallel is drawn between the love story of Maria do Mar and Pedro and that of Robert Machim and Ana d'Arfet who, fleeing England to France, are washed ashore at Machico on Madeira Island following a violent storm. The show has a cast of around 50 actors, singers and dancers.
The lead roles are played by Micaela Abreu (Maria do Mar) and Diogo Garcia (Pedro). The various characters appearing throughout the story speak in Portuguese and English according to their origin, with simultaneous translation of both languages. The songs included as part of the show and sung live by the cast are well known songs from the repertoires of artists such as Mariza, António Zambujo, Luísa Sobral, Max, Elvis Presley and more.
