Madeira Flower Festival and Wine Festival
The 2020 edition of the Flower Festival takes place this year, exceptionally, between September 3rd to 27th, in a new format, integrating the Wine Festival.
Under the theme “Madeira, Universe of Flowers” (Madeira, Universo de Flores), the Flower and Wine Festival will include more than 50 performances by 9 groups, with the usual parade being replaced by several initiatives taking place in different locations in Funchal city, namely in Avenida Arriaga Central Walkway, Largo da Restauração, Avenida Francisco Sá Carneiro and Praça do Povo, the latter more connected with the Wine Festival.
Flower and Regional Flavours’ Market - September 3rd to 27th
Venue: Avenida Arriaga Central Walkway
The flower market allows the public to discover the countless floral and decorative species that exist in Madeira. This location counts on 10 wooden stalls, which will accommodate the flower and regional products’ dealers.
In order to ensure respect for the distancing and hygiene measures issued by the health authorities (IASAUDE and DGS), circulation corridors for the public will be created so as to allow visitors to visit the various areas of Avenida Arriaga in safety. Thus, locals and visitors can (safely) purchase flowers in a picturesque and traditional environment.
In addition to the flowers, some regional products will also be present.

Madeira Wine Lounge - September 3 to 27
Venue: Praça do Povo
Wine tasting with the presence of regional producers along with the tasting of regional snacks in a “lounge” environment with live concerts.
This year, Praça do Povo will be the most privileged location for tourists and locals to safely enjoy wine tasting and regional gastronomy, to the sound of performances by musical groups of different genres. This area will include three specific zones: one dedicated to Wine, with a sales area in the presence of regional producers, along with wine tasting; another for musical performances and the respective stage; and also an area for gastronomy, where the public can enjoy some snacks.
In this “lounge” environment location, which combines tradition with glamour, the decoration, using wooden pergolas over the table and seating areas, as well as the areas next to the wine producers' counters, a relaxation area next to the stage, calls for an inviting and welcoming environment.
Wall of Hope - September 5th
Venue: Praça do Município
Children will be able to place a flower on the “Wall of Hope”, this year, without the usual ceremony and schools’ parade, but accompanied individually by their family members.
On Saturday morning, and following the tradition that dates back to 1979, children will be able to place a flower on the “Wall of Hope”, in a symbolic appeal for Peace in the world.
This year, children who want to fulfill this tradition, will not proceed in the schools’ parade, but rather accompanied by their family members.
Performances by the Flower Groups - 4, 5, 6 and 19, 20 September (over two weekends)
Venue: Various locations in Funchal.
There will be about 50 performances by the various groups.
The fabulous Allegoric Flower Parade which takes around downtown Funchal with great animation and beauty, will give rise to about 50 performances this year, by the various groups which usually participate in that parade. Spread over two weekends, and with a reduced number of participants, these performances, which have flowers as their main theme, will take place in various locations in Funchal, in an authentic celebration of the countless floral species that bloom throughout the year in the entire Region.
Flower Exhibition - September 3rd to 27th
Venue: Praça da Restauração
The Flower Exhibition will be maintained, but with a change of location to Praça da Restauração, next to the Central Walkway.
The Flower Exhibition has its origins in the event that took place in the 50's at the Ateneu Comercial do Funchal.
In Praça da Restauração, the most beautiful specimens of flowers, of the most varied types and grown throughout Madeira, produced with all the care and dedication by their growers, can be appreciated and evaluated.
The flowers on display are evaluated in their various categories by a specialized jury, with the best specimens being awarded a prize.
Floral Carpets - September 3rd to 27th
Venue: Various locations in Funchal.
The tradition of creating floral carpets proliferates throughout the island and originates in the decoration of religious processions.
Thanks to its undeniable beauty and diligence, as from a few years ago, the floral carpets began to mark their presence in the Flower Festival, partaking once again this year, in an event which exceptionally combines the Flower Festival with the Wine Festival.
Madeira Flower Collection - September 12 and 13
Venue: Pier 8
Pier 8 is getting ready to receive the 2nd edition of the “Madeira Flower Collection” an initiative which combines fashion with one of the main events in the Region, enriching and complementing the Flower Festival with glamour and contemporaneity, generated by regional fashion designers.
Organized by the Madeiran Young Entrepreneurs Association (AJEM), the “Madeira Flower Collection” counts on the presence of 18 creators, who, inspired by the unique engagement of flowers, will parade their innovative proposals, with the freedom in the use of materials and fabrics.
In addition to the fashion contest, the work of the 9 participating designers, 4 more than in the previous edition, will be selected and awarded.
In this edition, the children’s component will be a novelty, an introduction intended to capture a more diverse and comprehensive audience.
In a pandemic context, the event is organized respecting the rules and protective measures, especially in terms of social distancing, dividing the stylists' presence over two days, and controlling the number of spectators.
Flower Concerts - September 24th to 27th
Venue: Concerts and entertainment in emblematic locations inside and outside Funchal.
During this event, music concerts will be held in Funchal and other emblematic locations on Madeira Island, in order to decentralize the festivities and reinforce the entertainment offer.
These concerts take place in an atmosphere with a unique surrounding, with implemented rules and protective measures, where the public - tourists and residents - can safely enjoy high quality music moments in a scenario of unique beauty, surrounded by the diversity of the Madeiran flora.
