Juvenal Franco | Boneca de Canudo
This is a family project, in which father and daughter produce red table wine. The vineyards are located at several altitudes in the municipality of Machico, with the Touriga Nacional, Merlot and Syrah varieties, in a total of a hectare, in which approximately 3300 bottles are produced per year with the “Boneca de Canudo” brand. The story behind this wine is quite funny. The idea to plant vines there came from a woman, civil engineering, therefore the holder of a canudo (popular denomination of the degree’s diploma). As the agricultural works in the area were traditionally carried out by men, one of them vented: “That doll (boneca) with the canudo was just what we needed!”. The vent was known and commented, and the producers decided that it should be the name of the wine. It is the daughter, Elsa Franco, who is focused on the disclosure and trade of the wine. Recently, the red wine of 2016 won a bronze medal on the renowned contest “Sommelier Wine Awards” of 2019. The red wine of 2015 had already won a silver medal on the same contest in 2016. The first experiences with white varieties are currently ongoing in the vineyards in Machico, Ponta do Sol and Santo da Serra.
