Elsa Maria da Silva Ferreira | Pedra de Fogo
It is in the eastern edge of the Island of Madeira, in the parish of Caniçal, particularly in the Agricultural Park of Caniçal, where the geomorphological characteristics of the location present rocky outcrops of red and basaltic stone, that the vineyards give rise to the Madeiran red wine “Pedra de Fogo” [Fire Stone]. The location’s specificity, its proximity to the sea, the conducting system and the modern production and winemaking techniques make this wine a balanced and fresh nectar.
This wine’s producer is called Elsa Ferreira, graduated in Agricultural Engineering. Upon the completion of the course, the opportunity to develop this project in the Agricultural Park of Caniçal appeared. She embraced this project with tenacity, boldness, determination and dedication, because when opportunity walks hand-in-hand with occasion, it is even better. In 2003, with a gross area of 2ha, between the mountain and the sea, the plantation of the vines with the Touriga Nacional variety was begun, which main goal was, and still is, the production of a Madeiran red table wine – Madeiran PDO. The 2007 harvest was the first introduced on the market. The “Pedra de Fogo” wine has unique characteristics, exclusively produced with grapes from the exploitation of the planted variety Touriga Nacional. The wine harvest usually takes place on the second week of September. This is a manual harvest and the grapes are processed in the São Vicente Winery. Approximately 6 thousand bottles are produced on a yearly basis, subsequently traded on the regional market. The “Pedra de Fogo” wine is widely accepted by part of the consumers.
