Located in Santa Cruz, Cristiano Ronaldo International Airport (Madeira) is the main gateway to the region. It is used on a regular basis by the main European airlines.
The airstrip is a remarkable piece of civil engineering that deserves admiration.
It connects Madeira to all airports in Portugal in a 1.5 hour flight and to the main airports in Western Europe in just over 3 hours. Flights to Porto Santo Island take 15 minutes.
Madeira Airport is the most remarkable structure ever to be built on the island. The runway at the old Funchal airport has been extended from 1600 meters to 2781 meters. The new track, partly built on the sea, is an imposing structure. It is based on 180 pillars which constitute a true masterpiece of civil construction. Each pillar has a diameter of 3 meters and rises to a height of up to 50 meters.
The large and modern terminal has a tourist information office, a reservation center for residential tourism, a post office, car rental and travel agencies, a currency exchange office, a restaurant , bars and several shops. There are also two free wi-fi internet access points (wireless connection).
The airport is located 16 km from Funchal, which takes around 15 minutes.
You can check the arrival and departure times for flights to the islands of Madeira and Porto Santo on the ANA website - Aeroportos de Portugal, S.A. Flights from major international airports are also indicated.
