The Belmond Reid's Palace Hotel commemorated its 120 anniversary?

Did you know...the Belmond Reid's Palace Hotel in Funchal, is commemorated in 2011 its 120th anniversary. This event held at the beginning of the year offered a special traditional Scottish dinner, the "Burn's Supper" in honour of its founder and of his contemporary, the poet Robert Burns.
Apart from these commemorative initiatives the hotel has also released in September a publication regarding this event. This book resulted from an historical study executed in collaboration with “The Most Famous Hotels in the World” organization.
This publication tells the story of William Reid but also of its illustrious guests, such as the Austrian Empress “Sissi”, Sir Winston Churchill apart from episodes regarding the hotels legendary teas and parties.
The Scotsman William Reid visited Madeira for the first time in 1836 and in 1886 started to erect the hotel, after having made his fortune in the wine import and export trade. The hotel opened in 1891, following his death and it became one of the Islands main icons.
This hotel is currently the only Orient-Express hotel in Portugal.
