"BAILINHO DA MADEIRA" IN THE SEMI FINAL OF THE CONTEST “7 WONDERS OF POPULAR CULTURE®”
"Bailinho da Madeira" went on to the semi-final of the contest "7 Wonders of Popular Culture®", in the Music and Dance category, in an event broadcast by RTP1, on August 16, from the village of Porto de Mós, thus joining the remaining 27 national pre-finalists in the competition.
"Bailinho da Madeira" was composed by the popular Madeiran poet João Gomes de Sousa, better known as the "Feiticeiro da Calheta" (“Wizard of Calheta”), who, in 1938, played and sang this song during the first harvest festival in Funchal, personifying, in our days, the Autonomous Region of Madeira, in musical terms.
The candidacy, by the Municipality of Calheta, therefore proceeds to the semi-finals along with another of the regional pre-finalists - "Fachos" (Torches), a candidacy submitted by the Municipality of Machico, in the Rituals and Customs category, in an event to be held in the last week of August.
The Final Gala is scheduled to take place on September 5, 2020 and will be broadcast on RTP1 and RTP Internacional, in prime time.
